Nava Mau isn't the first transgender person nominated for an Emmy, and she certainly won’t be the last.
The Baby Reindeer star is nominated in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie category—making her the fourth transgender gender person nominated at the award show and the first in the category—and the importance of the moment is not lost on her.
“I think that what we've been fighting for as a community is to be able to tell stories that come from the heart and that are based from a human foundation,” Nava told Live from E! host Laverne Cox, who was the first transgender person to be nominated for an Emmy, and who grew emotional speaking with Nava. “Because that's who we are as trans people, we are humans first and foremost.”
The 32-year-old, who wore a gown designed by RuPaul’s Drag Race star Gigi Goode, continued, “That’s what I think is the best thing to celebrate about Baby Reindeer, is that, yes, it's an LGBT show, it's a show that has a trans character on it, and it's also a really good show. And it's something I'm very proud of."
As she put it, "Ultimately, I hope that we continue to get to be all that we are as trans people onscreen.”
It's a similar sentiment to what she shared following the news of her nomination.
“I am at a complete loss for words," the actress wrote of being nominated. "This morning is such an emotional rollercoaster filled with tears of joy over this recognition of my work, and for my humanity as a trans Latina woman."
“Today is an affirmation of my existence and my journey as a working actor," she continued. "It is a dream come true and I am so humbled and deeply grateful for this nomination. Most importantly, I am thankful to my peers for not only bestowing me with this nomination, but celebrating this groundbreaking moment for the Trans community at large.”
And Nava isn’t the only actress from Baby Reindeer who has been honored with a nomination for their performance.
Creator Richard Gadd—who also stars in the show based off his own lived experience—as well as star Jessica Gunning and actor Tom Goodman-Hill are also nominated, while the show itself is up for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.
The nominations, as well as the critical acclaim and positive reception the series received upon its release, are still “pinch me” moments for Richard.
As he told E! News in a statement following the Emmy nominations, “I couldn’t have imagined in my wildest dreams when I was writing this show in my tiny flat during Covid that it would go on to have 11 Emmy nominations.”
But before the awards are handed out, keep reading to see all the stars’ red carpet looks at the 2024 Emmys.
